I'm about halfway through it right now, and it's oddly similar. If purple prose irritates you, just try to ignore it and get into the book a bit... I am glad I didn't give up on it, because it is super weird and cool. Hm, the summary on Amazon makes it sound totally trashy, but it's not. Oh my gosh, you should read Palimpsest then!
