Guess what? My pay-what-you-want sale is still going!
The response hasn’t been as exciting as I thought it would be, and I’m suspecting this is for two reasons:
1. Low exposure (I would like to thank the Loyal 13 who subscribe via Google Reader ;)
2. People don’t like it when they aren’t told how much they have to pay
I have tried to address problem #1 as well as I can, but problem #2 I can not help you with. I can only say that you must be brave, and just make up a price. You must not over-think the issue.
For example, say you have a friend who does not have much art on their walls, and you think they really should have a high-quality photograph of a giant eyeball tacked to their kitchen wall. You’re thinking, “That would make such a cool present! I mean, that is an 8×10″ print– that’s one big eyeball!” But then you think, “Wait, I have to make up a price? What if I get the price Wrong? Am I going to get in trouble?” The answer to that is NO, dear reader: there is no wrong price.
My motivation for this pay-what-you-want sale is not to make a lot of money, nor to run a psychology study. It’s just to kind of… get interest going, hack the process of art-buying, and experiment. If you think it would be fun, or funny, to buy a print for one dollar, then you should do it!
Also, I can tell you right now that your grandparents definitely need a print of Sad Breakfast. Do you think your dog would appreciate a print of Dahlia tacked above his water bowl? Do you have a spare 8×10″ frame laying around and you’re wondering what the heck you should put it in? I know– Crow.
Go, be free, put art on your walls!
