Funny-envy

So look, I have been thinking about starting a web comic, but I have been feeling concerned about how my sense of humor is so weird that it’s probably not even funny to a lot of people, and I’ve sort of made my peace with that– and I also always end up thinking about XKCD and how Randall Munroe is inconsistent, weird, not afraid to make mistakes, etc, and I feel encouraged.

But he keeps coming up with the funniest shit. Check out yesterday’s strip, for example.

How can I ever be that funny?

Am I okay with having a kind of lame web comic? Yeah. Yeah, I think I am. So maybe one will appear soon. -Ish.

Update: I just discovered that some person translates XKCD into Spanish, which is awesome, because… is there a cooler way to practice my Spanish? Probably not. And it’s still funny in Spanish!

Oh man, another update: The New Yorker did an interview with Munroe — and the author challenged him to a cartoon-off which I believe Munroe clearly won:

  3. I’ve had multiple people tell me that I remind them of A Softer World.

I’m not sure what that means.

  4. omfg, that comic is hilarious! I’ve never seen it before!

And uh… I’m not sure… what your friends mean by comparing you to that comic, but I would take it as a compliment.

Now I have funny-envy for Softer World too. DAMMIT.

  6. It’s a sign!

I think spam titles or captcha words could make a great new kind of *mancy.

By the way, you do understand that you are challenging my 4-year-long tradition of sleeping in until like 2pm on Sundays, right? This is difficult for me.

Ah, but you haven’t been there to see the start time steadily slipping because apparently none of us are early risers.

Is this a bad kind of challenge though, or a good one?

  8. Well, as long as I’m getting the sleep I need at other times, it doesn’t really matter.

I guess the real issue is that I’m fickle about “weekly commitments” (since I cut them out of my life about 3 years ago, and am starting a slow reintroduction), so as long as ya’ll understand that… :D

As a show of solidarity for your lack of commitment, your comrades have all opted to skip this week. ;-) I think I need to shake up the current semi-rigid weekly schedule (which only exists by default) because it doesn’t seem to be serving the purpose very well.

Today’s eerily apropos ReCaptcha text: “fixed Assembly”. It’s freaking me out!

  10. As a show of solidarity, I completely forgot about it! Hahaha. I am just now drinking my coffee. I agree we should shake up the schedule.

I used to use alnk.org a lot, and the combination of adj/noun that was generated was often oddly appropriate too. :)

I can’t even read the recaptcha text I’m supposed to type. Thank god for the reload option.

I swear to god the first word is “Poopte” though. str6amor…?!
