riding in the sun

Today I had that first transcendent bike ride of summer where the air slips over your face and arms like cream, and turbulent eddies behind your head jiggle your hair back and forth as it pokes out of your helmet…

It’s 67 degrees right now. I didn’t wear a bra, or socks, or a bike hat or gloves or sunglasses… just a couple tank tops, rolled up pants, and sandals. It was glorious. It reminded me of the first time Richard took me bike riding, across the Roosevelt Bridge… it felt like I was flying.

I don’t always feel well enough to ride my bike, but it’s hard to resist when the morning is so sunny. If you have never lived in Seattle or farther north, maybe you can’t quite understand the deprivation we go through during winter and early spring. Sunshine and warmth are like a liquid gold tonics which induce euphoria. Possible side effects include not going to work, leaving work early, quitting work entirely, laying supine on any warm surface in the city…

Vive le vélo! Vive le soleil!
