scarlet runner bean

The scarlet runner bean. Phaseolus coccineus. I love it.

The flowers are a glowing, iridescent red. Hummingbirds adore them for their nectar. The flowers are edible, and the beans too, when they are young. I started growing them a couple years ago, in pots on my deck (for lack of planting space), and I collected the beans at the end of the growing season and used them to grow next year’s vines.

I started sprouting some of last year’s beans, even though it’s about three weeks before our frost date… I can’t wait for the growing season to start. Sun, beam down… soil, warm up…
