a sketch a day

I’m going through a motivational dry spell right now, so I’m just going to post a quick note about a project I started a little over a month ago.

I am part of a flickr group dedicated to a self-portraiture project, wherein the participant takes one self-portrait each day for an entire year. I’m on my 291st day of the project, and I have learned so much from this experiment so far. One of the most important lessons is that I can squeeze something art-related from my brain even on the worst days. I learned that it’s sometimes on these (seemingly) creativity-barren days that frustration will push me to create something new, something that I would never have otherwise bothered to try.

So, a little over a month ago, I decided to try this experiment with drawing. I’ve been sad about my extremely slow artistic progress, and I thought this might spice it up. It has. The least I have to do each day is make some type of tiny sketch, to put some small effort forth, through the pencil or pen or brush. I have found that on some days I have the energy and inclination to do much more. It’s cool.

The following drawing is one of these daily projects. It would be too confusing to try to explain the meaning here, but I like it and it makes me laugh every time I see it.
