This is my friend, Devil Squirrel. He is our resident squirrel and peanut hog. Richard gave him his name because Richard thinks that Devil Squirrel exhibits a sinister lack of respect for human boundaries.
We found out that he has been caught inside our upstairs neighbor’s apartment, robbing a bowl of nuts on the counter. Perhaps this explains his recent tendency to charge at our front door when I open it to toss nuts outside. He knows there are good things inside houses.
Sometimes I see Devil Squirrel peering in our living room windows in the morning when he comes around for his handout. It’s kind of unnerving. On the whole, however, I really like having him around. It’s kind of like having a cute, shy, scary pet who I don’t have to feed every day, and for whom I have no veterinary obligations.
