I’m ecstatic– I got up early this morning to photograph the moon setting over the Aurora bridge, and those shots didn’t turn out– but after the sun rose, I saw a great blue heron sitting at the top of the big tree down the hill from me! A crow was very angry at the intrusion (of course) and kept pestering the heron, who seemed not at all concerned.
I ran inside to get my camera (chanting the “please stay there, please stay there” mantra), and when I came outside, I saw the heron turn slowly to face the sun. The branches didn’t move at all as he shifted position. His movements were fluid, very slow, and steady, almost afterthoughts. I have seen herons stalk fish, stepping without making a ripple, as if their legs were part of the quiet water itself.
