As a child I used to be fascinated by nightshade berries. They looked so edible– translucent, multi-colored, juicy, tiny jewels. I was told they were poisonous. It turns out they’re closer to “non edible” than “poisonous” (meaning they taste bad but won’t actually hurt you).
In Seattle, the plant grows everywhere– in waste areas, alleyways, my back yard. The berries start to ripen in late summer and early fall. I took the following photo of Solanum dulcamara last year around this time.

I have plans to make a bittersweet nightshade berry tart. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
