This is my friend Dave. He’s walking down the delta of the Tuito river in Yelapa, Jalisco, Mexico, out to the ocean, through tepid rushing shallows to the Bahia de Banderas. The sun is hot and my friends and I have been wandering on a dirt path, passing children coming home from school, passing meandering livestock, discarded dolls, taut golden domes of spider webs, clusters of bananas. We finally decide to head back to the beach, choosing to walk back through the river instead of taking the dusty path. A little school boy takes interest in our group and walks ahead of us. He is shy and I try to talk to him in Spanish and take his picture, but he just smiles and turns away and keeps skipping ahead. We finally reach the beach, and the school children board a motor boat to return home. My friends and I go sit in the shade and slake our thirst with weak Mexican beer.
